4x4 Off-Roader (42099) PF-mod

This is a replacement for the Control+ base using Power Functions elements. It also uses the older hubs (instead of the new planetary ones), so the overall gearing has also been adjusted to compensate for the fact that the older hubs do not have internal gearing. The amount is 12:20,12:20,20:28 ≈ 3.9x.

Otherwise I tried to stick as much as possible to the original design, although I did change a few colors here and there. I also made a structural reinforcement so that there is less bending near the center (c.f. the beams to which the fake shift stick is attached), as well as doubling the shock absorbers in the rear, were the weight is.
There's also brand new feature: a gear-operated battery lift (see video). This mechanism serves two purpose: the battery can be lifted out, therefore accessed without unbuilding anything, not even bush pins; then, because worm gears can't be driven, it also effectively locks the battery in place. As a result, the receiver can be placed lower and is now flush with the frame.

About parts:

  • I didn't want to settle on a particular color for the frame, so I made it trans-bright-light-orange in the instructions. Here are the parts that you need in the color of your choice.
  • It's using the dashboard sticker from 42107
  • the white bush are in that color only as a color-coding for the anchor points to the frame

You need a V2 IR receiver for it to work. With slight modifications, two V1 receivers could also be used though.

The rear upper suspension support arms are light bluish gray instead of dark bluish gray because unfortunately the 1x6 thin beam parts do not exist in that color. If you don't mind mixing the old & new shades you could use old dark gray (from 8002 or 8376). If you really want them in dark bluish gray, SEMBO 701800 Mobile Crane MK II has quite a few of them.
