Ripsaw SSR1 (RC)

 MOC-30972 Ripsaw SSR1 (RC)

This is a medium-scale, remote-controlled replica of the Ripsaw SSR1 extreme off-road vehicle. Though it's nowhere near the real machine in terms of relative power or even ground clearance - definitely for indoor use only. But it does have a working fake V6 engine and suspension.

The U-joints used to drive the tracks are operating at an angle very near their limit, so power is certainly lost because of that, unfortunately. But it doesn't seem to produce visible negative effects otherwise. I wanted to have the two L-motors on top, in that position, to match the two huge cylinders the real vehicle has there.

There are two sets of instructions, one using a Lego battery box & IR-receiver, the other using a MouldKing battery box (which has an integrated receiver). MouldKing battery boxes have an internal USB-rechargeable battery pack, 4 PF ports, 2.4GHz wireless connection to a physical controller, do not have the motor connection limitations of either a V1 or V2 IR-receiver, have pin holes instead of studs, and are extremely light, which makes them a premium choice for controlling PF models.

I haven't tried the model with a Lego battery box, but since it's so heavy, consider that performance might be poor.

The cabling is made so that the motor <-> track connections are crossed (left controlling right and vice-verca). This is more intuitive if you're manually controlling each track with 2 levers, but won't work with more advanced controllers like MOC-10719 (swapping required in this case).

Lighting can easily be added on the top front lights; the only tricky part is to find where to stow the long cable & middle connector of the PF-LEDs.

I made a small video showing it when it's running:

Tracks are black beacause that's how they are on the real vehicle, but you really should pick the track color you like best:

..or how about bling-bling style? :)

I spent countless hours making the instructions, more than on the design itself.
